Nyugtalan vándoréletet élt. Bécsben is járhatott, ahol több műve nyomtatásban is megjelent. 1818 körül többször megfordult Veszprémben, Ruzitska Ignácban pártfogóra és barátra talált. Működésének fénykora az 1820-as évek elejére tehető, azután pályája lassan lehanyatlott. 1824-ben eltörte bal karját és ez véget vetett virtuóz pályájának. 1825-ben a királyné koronázásakor Pozsonyban még játszott. Öregkorára magára hagyatva élt. A 19. század elejének legkiválóbb zeneszerzője és előadóművésze, a verbunkos stílus legjelentősebb képviselője volt. Lavotta Jánossal és Csermák Antallal együtt a magyar zenei romantika virtuóz triászát alkotta. A neki tulajdonított kompozíciók nem mind hitelesek. Nem bizonyított feltevés szerint a Rákóczi-nótának és a Rákóczi-indulónak is Ő a szerzője. Balatonfüred volt a 19. sz. első felében a kiröpítő fészke annak a verbunkos zenének, amelynek Bihari is képviselője.
